Lynne and Eugene traded the stresses of New Jersey for laid-back living on a Caribbean beach. They say, "Now we have a cheaper, healthier, and more fulfilling lifestyle. We walk or ride our bikes everywhere we go. We meet people from all over the globe—good people, happy people. And in the U.S., we paid thousands a year in property tax. Here we pay $25."
You Could Be Living in Paradise Right Now… for a Lot Less than It Costs You to Stay Home
International Living's 9th Annual Ultimate Event
June 4-7, 2014 • Puerto Vallarta
Dear Explorer's Club Member,
The only thing Doran Yount and his wife Kim regret about their move overseas is that they didn’t do it 30 years earlier. "We could never have afforded our beautiful home on the beach in the U.S." But here, he says, "we live richer for less. Even our property taxes are cheaper, at only $18 a year."
On their beach in Belize, they built a house with a pool and a little guest cottage. They pay $26 a month for Internet access and about $1,000 a month keeps them and their many pets well fed. The weather hovers near 84 degrees year-round, and life is truly relaxed.
"I often think of my friends in the U.S. and Canada who are busy running their furnaces to the max and shoveling snow," says Doran. "Here I am in shorts and a tee shirt, watching the moon rise. We love it here. We are at home with the ocean, palm trees, pool… and all of it so affordable."
And they’re not the only ones happy to have "traded up" overseas.
"I love the beach," says Karen Huss, at the home she shares with her husband Bruce, overlooking a dramatic Pacific view in Costa Rica. "We used to live on the beach in Oceanside, California. But here, she says, "It cost a quarter of what it did there."
It’s not just Latin America that beckons, either. You can live better for less all over the world… if you know where to go. Take Jan Lee and Dave Barton in Italy, for instance. "We eagerly await each day here," says Jan, "and all the discoveries it will bring… not governed by clocks, deadlines, or spent in traffic."
The "Land of Opportunity" Isn’t a Fixed Place on the Map Anymore
In our increasingly global, interconnected world, the “land of opportunity” is wherever you want it to be. These days, you can live in one place, work in another, invest in a third, bank in a fourth… hold a second passport in a fifth…
They rent an elegant two-bedroom one block from their favorite lake for just $1,000 a month. "We live comfortably and regularly go to concerts, the ballet, and exhibitions. The finest art in the world is at our doorstep, and the history and architecture of this country would take several lifetimes to enjoy. Yet it’s not expensive… when I do my weekly shopping for groceries, I never spend more than $100… I purchased a voluntary Italian health card for $500, a fraction of what insurance would cost in the States."
These folks are but a handful among tens of thousands who have traded in the stresses and expenses back home and replaced them with a better life overseas, a life that’s lived richer but costs less.
This Is about More than Just Affordable Living
Of course, the promise of a higher-quality, more affordable lifestyle is just one reason to look beyond our shores.
What I mean is: In our increasingly global, interconnected world, the "land of opportunity" really isn’t a fixed place on the map anymore. It’s wherever you want it to be. These days, you can live in one place, work in another, invest in a third, bank in a fourth, hold a second passport in a fifth…
You can mine the best opportunities from all over the globe and not only embrace a fun, adventure-filled life, but also build for yourself a true measure of security and liberty, not just for you and your portfolio… but for your family and for your heirs.
I’m sure you’re familiar with the saying, "don’t put all your eggs in one basket." Well, that’s really what I’m talking about here.
It’s old-world thinking to assume that the best opportunities on the planet always reside within your home borders. That’s not the world we live in anymore.
Sure, the nightly news may report its stories of wars and politics. But that’s because your average news reporter isn’t out kicking the bushes hoping opportunity rolls out from under a rhododendron.
Here at International Living, though, that’s exactly what we do. We’re on the trail of opportunity every day—opportunity for fun, for personal growth, for adventure, and for profit. There’s no question: If you know where to look, you’ll find a whole other world out there, a world rich with opportunity.
That’s the world I’d like to open up for you.
Better Protect Your Wealth, Privacy,
and Personal Liberties Overseas
Because in the right places abroad—with the right strategies—you can not only live better for less, but you can better protect your wealth, your privacy, and your personal liberties.
You could lower your tax bill to almost zilch and keep more of your hard-earned income. You could protect yourself from frivolous lawsuits and government overreach.
Our Standard of Living is Higher Overseas
"We live in a gorgeous, clean colonial city filled with kind and gracious people… I’m happy to report that, in many ways, our standard of living exceeds the lifestyle we enjoyed in the States with two six-figure incomes. Only it costs us less than $2,000 a month."
—E.S., retired overseas
With the right footholds abroad, you could enjoy greater freedom and flexibility in your travels, your investments, and in your retirement, too…
You could grow your portfolio outside the U.S., outside the dollar, outside stocks and bonds…
But the best part of becoming a real citizen of the world like this is that it’s fun. It’s an adventure. And done right, it can prove much more cost-effective—and even profitable—than staying home.
Today it’s easier than ever to take advantage of smart opportunities abroad.
People say the world is getting smaller. But actually, it’s getting larger. New air routes are opening all the time. Exotic island paradises and bustling metropolitan centers—on the other side of the world—are easily accessible. Huge countries—which were off limits only a few years ago—are now open for business, for travel, for living.
This summer, we’re gathering all our best contacts and colleagues. All our editors from around the world. Expats. Attorneys. Offshore authorities. Currency, tax, and second-passport experts. Real Estate gurus. And more.
We’re bringing to one place—at one time—an extraordinary collection of resources you can learn from and tap into to create a personalized plan that maps out your best path to a life that’s richer, more interesting… and more affordable, too.
We’ll not only help you match what you want your life to look like with a real-world place where you can make it happen…
But we’ll also help you connect the dots so you have the inside track on the best ways to take advantage of opportunities all over the world, not only those that offer better-value living.
My Special Invitation to You
Please join me at International Living’s 9th annual Ultimate Event set for June 4-7, 2014 overlooking the Pacific in Puerto Vallarta, Mexico.
We’ll be hosting the most robust, engaging, international-minded program we’ve ever put on. More resources. More ideas. More solutions. More how-to guidance.
We’ll point you to the best destinations the world over… from Panama to France… Ecuador to Italy and Colombia… Costa Rica to Mexico… Belize to Spain and Brazil… from Thailand to Nicaragua… Malaysia to Uruguay… and well beyond…
We’ll introduce you to specific communities and get you plugged in and connected. So you’ll come away with a plan in place that makes sense for you, given your interests, your priorities, your preferences, and your needs.
Your Dream Life Overseas Is a Lot Closer than You Think
At a time when nest eggs have shrunk—and Social Security is less-than secure—looking beyond America's borders makes good sense.
The U.S. economy in recent years has dimmed the lights on the comfortable retirement so many people envisioned (and worked hard to ensure).
But the good news is: There are all sorts of havens beyond our borders where a couple can live comfortably on $1,200 a month, rent included (less if you own your home). With a $2,500-a-month budget, you could retire like royalty.
Places where you can own a lovely home overlooking the Pacific—not for the $1 million or more you might expect to pay in the States, but for a modest $140,000.
Where you can rent a furnished, two-bedroom apartment in the historic center of a university town we recommend for less than $600… or buy a 2-bedroom condo in a nice neighborhood for $80,000. Places where you can hire a housekeeper to come in twice a week… and pay $60 for the full month.
Where a couple can eat out at a nice Italian restaurant—three glasses of wine, two super-sized beers, an appetizer of six large garlic bread "knots" with marinara sauce, plus a shared Caesar salad and lasagna entrée later—all for $21, including tip…
These Folks Are Doing it, and So Can You
Take Richard and Nikki Detrich. They’d been living in the Ventura-Santa Barbara area of California. Life was good there—but it was also hectic, stress-filled, and expensive.
A Million-Dollar Retreat… for Less than $300,000
Bill isn’t ready to retire. He still runs his business in the States. But he’s in the market for a vacation retreat.
A beautiful home on a cliff overlooking the Pacific in his native California would be nice—but cost-prohibitive. Not just the purchase price, but the holding costs.
Yet just a little farther south, along the very same Pacific coast, Bill could have it all. A beautiful ocean home, warm year-round weather, a gourmet restaurant and ocean bar on the premises… plus horseback riding, surfing, swimming, and the camaraderie of friends and neighbors.
Instead of paying $1.3 million as he could easily do in California... here he can grab a lot over an acre in size for $120,000 and build the home of his dreams—looking right out at the ocean—for $90 a square foot. He’s sitting pretty for under 300K.
The holding costs are substantially lower than in the States. He can rent the place out to vacationers to defray the cost of ownership. Plus now he’s diversified his holdings outside of stocks, outside the US dollar, outside the States. This is what international living is all about.
So they headed overseas. Today their costs are about 40% of what they paid to live in the U.S. And they haven’t sacrificed a thing. In fact, they’re living better than ever.
Their home, near a crystal-blue brook, overlooks the 9th hole of a lovely golf course. Their windows open to lush, green-valley vistas. The nearby community center houses a state-of-the-art spa and health club. They’ve got high-speed Internet, satellite television, gourmet food… all the comforts of home, but at a fraction of the price.
"It’s a lot like the U.S. was back in the 1950s, when I was a kid," Richard says.
And keep in mind: You don't have to live in a place full-time to reap the benefits of life overseas—the fun, the adventure, the cost savings—in fact, you can even make money while you're enjoying the good life.
Take Sandy Brown. She lives part of the year in a beachside community… and she runs a small vacation-rental business, which provides income to fund her life overseas. She maintains her ties "back home" in Canada. She travels. She takes a very flexible approach to life. And you can, too.
You could spend your summers at home and escape your snow shovel every winter to spend a month (or two or three) enjoying warm weather and good-value living in a place where the cost of living is a fraction of what it would cost you to stay home… and you gain the adventure of a new place, meet new people, maybe practice a new language…
As Sandy puts it, "It doesn't have to be an all-or-nothing move. You can test the waters and have the best of both worlds… whatever is best for you. It doesn't have to be scary and 100% life-changing, just life-enhancing."
You Can Trade Up Quickly, Easily, and Enjoyably
She's right. And this June… we'd like to show you how you can improve your own quality of life overseas—how you can live better, but keep a lot more of your hard-earned income in your own pocket.
Retire Abroad for Value and High Quality of Life
"It is absolutely true that value and a high quality of life can be found in a retirement abroad."
So you can spend it the way you want.
Whether you're looking for a full-time escape or just a part-time getaway where you can duck the cold…
We can help you turn your dream retirement into your reality this year. And show you how you can invest for profit now outside the States… and better protect your wealth, your privacy, and your future.
There's no more efficient way to get from where you are today… to taking smart advantage (quickly) of the best opportunities overseas right now than with a seat at our 9th Annual Ultimate Event.
There's no use ignoring the facts: Life can be challenging in the States today. Yet in certain places overseas—it's a different story entirely.
There's plenty of opportunity—in many ways, more opportunity than ever—to live better, save money, make money, and capitalize on the genuine growth and prosperity that's lifting certain markets, as ours here at home struggles…
In the right places overseas today, you can…
- Have your own two-bedroom, two-bathroom condo with 1,291 square feet of living space and sweeping ocean views out over a marina—fully furnished—for $145,000.
- Have household help once a week, or more… somebody to take care of your pool, cook, clean, do the laundry so you can spend that time doing things you enjoy—and all for less than $5 an hour.
- Slash your grocery bill by two-thirds, and eat better than you ever did back home… rent a two-bedroom, apartment (a hop-skip-and-jump from the heart of town) for just $590 a month. If you need a taxi, pay $1.50 for a short trip. The latest movies? See them for $3.
- In the U.S., the average health-insurance premium right now is just over $300 a month—plus you can add to that the out-of-pocket expenses of a high deductible. But in the right places overseas, you can gain coverage for as little as $300 a year.
These are some of the most exciting situations we've ever uncovered in our 33 years on this beat. In my view, 2014 is poised to be one of the most extraordinary periods you could be lucky enough to benefit from… if you take advantage of those opportunities.
In June, we'll show you how… how you can make the most of the situations overseas that best fit your needs… your interests… your goals. So that as soon as six months from now, you could be not just musing about that overseas dream… but actually living it!
New and Better Opportunities for Good-Value Living and Investing…in June We'll Share Them with You
As I said, we're uncovering new—and extraordinary—opportunities all the time. For instance…
- Who says Italy is out of your price range? You can enjoy the sweetness of life in Tuscany… your very own dream retreat for $94,820 (or even less). The drama of ruined castles… the culinary riches of village markets… the wild-flower meadows and orange-tree orchards. We'll show you where you can find it… and love it… for way, way less than you'd expect…
- On the Yucatan Gulf coast, you can still find houses just a block from the beach selling for less than $85,000. Mexico offers such incredible value, plus… wonderful weather, vibrant colonial towns, postcard-perfect beaches, rugged highlands, welcoming locals (many of whom speak English). This June, we'll introduce you to our favorite spots in this country, where you can live very well—including a maid three times a week and a gardener once— for about $2,100 a month (quite a bit less if you're willing to forego luxuries like household help).
- The region in France famed for its "sweetness of life." Here the locals live long and comfortable lives. It's a place where you still find the rural charm that's eroded in much of the rest of Europe. And you'll find it remarkably affordable, too. (The plat du jour and a carafe of red wine for $11.50… a two-bedroom village home for $134,000…)
Living Better Outside the States
"We could have retired comfortably in the U.S.... But we live three to four times better down here."
- In Panama, you can take advantage of the best retiree program on the planet—and save on almost everything, with discounts like 50% off entertainment, 30% off public transportation, big discounts on airfares, and even 25% off eating out. (All on prices that are already a fraction of what you're used to seeing at home.) For $140,000 you could have an apartment in one of the city’s best neighborhoods. Or own a 3-bedroom, 2-bath water-view condo at the beach, an hour outside the city, for just $130,000.
- A little-known spot in Costa Rica where cloud forests and towering mountains surround a 20-mile-long lake. If this lake were in the States or Canada, you'd have to fight for a place in line at the docks, lakefront restaurants, and bars any day of the week. But here you have them to yourself. And at a bargain. Small homes list for as little as $59,000. And you could grab a three-and-a-half acre lot with gorgeous views, for $99,000.
- An English-speaking haven in the South China Sea with tropical sunshine… silvery beaches… world-class diving… jungle adventure… and comfortable living on as little as $1,200 a month. Malaysia may surprise you with its beauty, ease, and affordability. Consider winter at the beach… or in cosmopolitan old-world Penang… a furnished apartment in a nice building with a pool, gym and car port goes for as little as $600 a month…
- Wander along the cobblestone streets and through the manicured parks in one of Ecuador's thriving colonial towns, and it's easy to imagine yourself enjoying life there. In one place we recommend, the population is young, vibrant, and well-educated. The weather is comfortably cool all year… and you can rent an apartment for as little as $400 a month. A three-bedroom, three-bath condo with an America-style kitchen goes very nicely furnished for $118,000…
In June, we'll bring you the lowdown on those opportunities and plenty more, too, in communities scattered all around places like Panama, Ecuador, Spain, Mexico, Italy, Nicaragua, Costa Rica, Uruguay, Thailand, Brazil, France, the Dominican Republic, Malaysia, Colombia, and beyond…

Uncover the Secrets that Make Ecuador, Uruguay, Colombia, and Spain Worth Your Attention
Dan Prescher and Suzan Haskins, two of our Senior Editors and authors of the hot new book, The International Living Guide to Retiring Overseas on a Budget.
Dan and Suzan have been living abroad since 2001—and they know the ropes better than anybody else. Today they’re based in Ecuador, but they’ve lived in Panama, Mexico, and Nicaragua as well. This summer, they’ll be on hand to share with you the lessons they’ve learned… to help you make your own transition overseas seamless, fun, and cost-effective.
Dan will act as our Emcee for this event. And he and Suzan will be on hand to lead the discussion about Ecuador. That great-value nation has a lot to offer—from temperate weather to majestic scenery… from good healthcare in the larger communities (at a fraction of what you pay in the States) to a warm and welcoming populace.
What’s more, it’s extremely affordable. Most retired couples in Cuenca, the most popular destination for English-speaking expats, say they live quite comfortably for $1,500 to $1,800 a month, and that includes rent.
Dan and Suzan will also share insider guidance in June about the nuts and bolts of an international life—no matter where you live. Things like what you do about shipping belongings or pets, or the best ways to bank or to stay in touch with friends and family back home…
David Hammond, originally from Seattle, writes for us at IL from Punta del Este, Uruguay. Living in Uruguay is a little like living in the United States in the 50's… but with all of today's conveniences. Crime is nearly non-existent. Plus despite its very "European" feel and all the comforts that come with that, $2,000 a month will provide you a very comfortable existence.
And you can still find properties for a song. In Montevideo, for instance, you can find 1-bedroom apartments in the desirable Pocitos neighborhood starting at around $100,000. For $225,000 you can get a three-bedroom, free-standing house.
Michael Evans, our correspondent in Colombia, will join us to talk about the many opportunities on display in that nation today. Take the colonial homes. Some are centuries old, while others date back to the late 19th or early 20th centuries. It’s common to find bargain-priced, fixer-upper, colonial-style homes in small communities—some for $50,000 or less. There’s a simple reason for this: Many Colombians believe that anything old is unfashionable and that new things are better. You can benefit from this fact.
But it’s not simply colonials that are the draw. In Medellin, for instance, you’ll find great restaurants, trendy bars, and fancy boutiques, as well as ample opportunity to take advantage of profit in rentals.
Glynna Prentice, based for us in Mexico, has in fact lived outside the States for much of her professional career, including stints in international banking in Brazil and strategic consulting for Price Waterhouse in Spain.
Glynna will be in hand at the Ultimate Event to focus your attention on Mexico. She'll talk about places where you can enjoy the comforts and built-in beauty of a colonial city and have access to activities like the opera, shopping, movies, music in the streets almost every night… and own a historic home from $110,000…Rentals in Mexico’s colonial cities can offer excellent value, too. There’s a beautifully furnished two-bedroom, two-and-half bath place in San Miguel, for instance, with a rooftop deck offering expansive city views for $1,500 a month—and that includes the maid, wifi, and cable tv.
Glynna will point you to beachfront… seaside towns… lakeside retreats… and more…
Plus she’ll tell you about how to best take advantage of the considerable savings waiting for you on medical treatments in Mexico—and beyond—too. Hip replacement? Stateside it would be $43,000 to $63,000. In Mexico, $12,000. Cataract surgery? $5,000 to $6,000 per eye up north. In Mexico, $1,600 to $1,800.
And, as our resident Spain expert as well—Glynna spent last summer back in her old stomping grounds and is headed there again this year to spend a few months as well—she’ll share her latest finds.
Spain’s market is on the floor and bargains abound, particularly in the south. Throw in amazing Mediterranean weather, where even winter days average in the 60’s… and the varied terrain, where snow-capped peaks for hiking and skiing lie here hours from the beach…the fact that in lots of towns couple can live well here on $2,000 a month… and it adds up to arguably the best value for money in Europe today.
Explore the Promise of Good-Value Living and Investing in Panama, Italy, Nicaragua, Belize, and Costa Rica…
Jessica Ramesch, our woman on the ground in Panama, will be your source for real-world, tell-it-like-it-is intelligence about this very popular destination—which won top honors this year in our Index of the world’s best retirement havens.
As she'll explain in June, Panama is a great place to upgrade your lifestyle—and do it for less than it would cost you to stay home.
Panama’s allure lies in a rare combination of value and variety. Plenty of places in the world offer one or the other. But how many offer both? Panama is a country that offers convenience—the U.S. dollar is the currency, you don’t need electric adaptors for your appliances, you’re two-and-a-half hours from Miami, and you can get anything there.
It just "works." Huge infrastructure investment is underway and so the roads are decent and getting even better. It's a banking hub. The healthcare is very good and costs half or less what you’d pay in the States—there’s even a Johns Hopkins-associated hospital in the capital city.
Plus friendly immigration policies make this nation more accessible than ever. Not only does the Pensionado visa program offer retirees a convenience option, but two new residence programs make it easier than ever to stay here whether you’re a retiree or younger.
In addition to all that, Panama offers tremendous variety at good-value prices. Beach towns, mountain escapes, big cities, quiet villages. Steamy jungles, cool-weather highlands. You have options here. And a couple can live comfortably here for $1,700 a month, rent included.
You'll hear from Steenie Harvey this June as well. Our intrepid Euro editor will be on hand to bring you her straight-shooting take on where in Italy you can reap all the benefits of the good life for a small fraction of what you'd expect it to cost.
In a corner of Tuscany sometimes called the "Land of a Hundred Castles," for instance—you can own your own Italian retreat (a three-bedroom affair an hour from beaches, half an hour from skiing) for just $109,000. Or, consider a stretch of coast that has Italy’s second-largest national park. The beaches here are sandy, wide, and easily accessible. And with water views, you can find a two-bedroom, one-bath apartment from $117,000. The trick is to know where to go—where the tourists aren’t, ultimately. And in June, Steenie will lay it all out for you.
Tuey Murdock, a long-time expat in Nicaragua, will lay out the benefits of that haven, one where reputation still lags the reality on the ground. This is a country rapidly coming into its own and ideal for for adventuresome sorts, who will find it bursting with opportunity.
Whether along the Pacific coast—which serves up some of the best-value beach buys on the planet—or in a colonial city like Granada, where bakeries and cafes are opening in surprising numbers, you’ll find that on a budget of as little as $1,000, you can fund a comfortable life, rent included.
Belize is a country that ticks a lot of boxes for would-be expats, and with reason. It’s English-speaking, close by in the Caribbean, offers gorgeous beaches, nice warm weather, and great beauty. It’s the quintessential "no shoes, no shirt, no problem" destination. Plus a special residence program for retirees allows you to declare Belize your country of residence, though you’re not required to be physically present there more than a handful of weeks a year.
Our resident correspondent in Belize, Ann Kuffner, will point you to the very best this tiny nation has to offer, and that includes remarkable-value real estate. Consider that the average condo in Bermuda sells for $800,000—but that you can own one on Ambergris Caye, Belize’s most popular resort island, for $200,000.
Our man on the ground in Costa Rica, Jason Holland, will be on hand for this event, too. And he’s bringing with him a whole basket full of opportunities for you: great-value destinations… good-living options… real-world intelligence… and Costa Rica secrets you won’t hear about anywhere else.
For instance, he’ll talk about an outdoor-lover’s paradise that’s attracting friendly, laid-back expats who enjoy an easy-going, low-cost lifestyle. This place is about three hours from San Jose… and the views are extraordinary. So is the weather—not too hot, good breezes. If you like to sail, kayak, canoe… this place is for you.
From Malaysia to Thailand to France…
Exotic, Culture-Rich Living
And you’ll hear from Keith Hockton, too. Keith is our correspondent in Malaysia, and he’ll pull back the curtain and share with you an insider’s perspective about this Southeast Asia gem.
Malaysia is hard to beat if you’re looking for warm weather and beaches. It’s a tropical 82 degrees year-round and delivers swaths of white sand. English is the defacto first language. And it has some of the region’s best street food, great restaurants, bars, shopping malls and movie theaters.
Two people can have a three-course meal here for $10. A bagful of fresh fruit costs around $4. You can have a maid pick up after you and clean the house once a week for four hours at a cost of $12. The healthcare in Malaysia is very good—and extremely affordable. This June, you’ll get the full rundown on where to go and what to expect…
Thailand is another place well worth your attention. For pennies on the dollar, as Keith will explain, you get a year-round tropical climate and access to modern comforts and conveniences, including affordable, high-quality medical care.
And it’s beautiful. Think turquoise seas and white sand beaches, jagged limestone cliffs, beach-rimmed islands, mountainous jungle retreats. With that comes a whole range of lifestyle options. On a budget of around $1,800 including rent a couple can live well anywhere in the country.
You may assume France is out of your price range… but you’d be surprised. As our France correspondent, Barbara Diggs, will tell you: In the right places, you can enjoy all the best France has to offer—a history-rich culture, incredible food, pretty landscapes, and the civilized pace—and do it for less.
Naturally, Paris costs more. But consider a sun-kissed, flower-filled corner of France where almost every loop and bend along its web of rivers reveals a perched village, a medieval town, or the turrets of a chateau. Here a small property with a garden would sell from $95,000…
Within easy reach of Paris, you’ll find all sorts of gems. Like a medieval village that’s a UNESCO World Heritage site. Homes are half-timbered and window boxes overflow with pink flowers. It’s a lively place with plenty of shops, bakeries, and cafes. A three-course meal at a fancy place runs about $35 per person, but there are a few bistros that offer a three-course lunch for $17 or less. Here you could have a 2-bedroom apartment in town for $153,000.
You Can’t Beat the "In-the-Field" Intelligence You’ll Gain
Throughout our program this summer, in addition to our expert editors, you'll also hear from folks just like you who have traded up to a new life overseas. They'll share their stories and the lessons they've learned so you can avoid the mistakes they made… and find your own "right" life overseas quickly, easily, and seamlessly…
I’ve Never Been this Free
"I have never been this free in my life. At home we'd have been hard-pressed to retire at all. But here we have a view of the ocean from our deck. And we're living happily on $1,219 a month."
To help you on your way, we’ve invited Warren Hardy of the Warren Hardy Spanish School in San Miguel de Allende, Mexico. Many of the countries you’ll learn about in June are Spanish-speaking—and that can be a roadblock for many folks.
Warren can help you waltz right around it. His specialty is teaching expats—seniors primarily—how to speak Spanish. He gears his programs specifically for older learners and he makes it fun. This summer, he’ll talk about why it’s important that you learn the local language wherever you end up… and will show you—right there on the spot—some tricks to make it a lot easier than you imagine.
The intelligence our editors and guest speakers who are out there "in the field" share is worth the cost of admission alone. Because just one recommendation… one single caution… one learned-the-hard-way aside… could save you months of time or thousands of dollars.
After all, our Ultimate Event isn't just about living overseas…
It's really about seizing the best opportunities on offer around the world right now—opportunities to help you rescue your retirement, grow your portfolio, protect your wealth, fund a new life… invest for profits ahead of a boom…
Where—and How—to Position Yourself for Profits Overseas
And that's why we've invited a full panel of well-respected experts in the many different ways you can make smart use of the opportunities that open up to you when you look beyond your own borders. Among them, for instance…
You'll hear from Ronan McMahon, the expert at the helm of Real Estate Trend Alert. He'll talk about the strategies for identifying markets with potential for appreciation and share his picks for the best places to invest for gains today, like…
- The next "gold coast" in Costa Rica, where you can buy right now for about 1/12th what you'd pay in that country's well-known Guanacaste region… and position yourself for gains. It's been really hard to get to. But a new road is in here as well and open… and with the seven-hour drive down to three, this region is about to be the next great Costa Rica find…
- How to find—and play —distressed deals to pick up properties at a small fraction of what they sold for at peak prices. Ronan has looked to Spain, the U.K.—and most recently to Ireland—for deals that make sense, and in June he'll share his latest finds with you…
What people are saying about the International Living’s Ultimate Event
"This was way beyond my expectations! Very mind stretching which I love! Not only did it meet expectations but exceed by a long shot—very well organized with loads of great information."
— Donald Miech
"Much more than we expected. Thanks for a great experience! It opened our eyes to a lot of possibilities. I am much more excited, and less anxious, about the thought of moving."
"Outstanding organization, content, flow timing and professionalism of presenters. Impressed with IL and support personnel and their friendliness and willing helpfulness. A bunch of 'real people."
—Paul D. Therrien
"Terrific first conference to attend. Great, informative sessions—not too long, kept to schedule, helpful, thoroughly enjoyed and appreciated people we’ve met and networked with."
One accessible, proven way, is to rent out a property you own for income when you’re not there. And I’m not just talking standard-issue rental here, but a special approach that allows you to charge "hotel prices" for overnight stays. It’s a smart way to defray your holding costs or, even better, have your property pay for itself entirely. We’ve invited Beth Carson, author of Profitable Vacation Rentals, to share with you exactly how it’s done.
With the right approach, the right know-how… you could take your "someday in the future" overseas dream and make it your reality—a lot sooner than you probably imagine. Because done right, your escape could actually make you money—cash in your pocket, month in and month out. You gain all the benefits of your own private retreat… fixed up the way you like it… in a place you love… only you essentially use "other people’s money" to pay for it.
There are several ways you can arrange your affairs so an investment in international real estate can pay for itself, and we’ll introduce you to several of them this June.
Invest for Protection as Well as Profit
We've invited attorneys from the many countries we'll introduce you to, as well. Like Rainelda Mata-Kelly from Panama… Paulo Peixoto from Brazil… Roberto Moreno from Ecuador… Dr. Juan Federico Fischer from Uruguay… and Ernesto Arranaga Patron from Mexico… to name just a few.
The idea is to give you personal access to the very people who can answer some of your toughest questions, and help you make your overseas dream a reality.
This event is perhaps the only opportunity for you to be introduced to all these legal professionals under one roof. They can help you get started right away. And equally important, they can also save you from making those common, costly mistakes.
You'll hear from Robert E. Bauman as well. Bob is a former member of the U.S. House of Representatives and is our legal counsel here at IL. His writings have appeared in the New York Times, Washington Post, Wall Street Journal, and National Review. He's written countless books, including The Offshore Money Manual… The Complete Guide to Offshore Residency, Dual Citizenship and Second Passports… Where To Stash Your Cash: Offshore Tax Havens of the World…
And in June he'll talk about…
- How, why, and where to get dual citizenship—and how you can use it to legally reduce your tax bill…
- How to protect your retirement savings by investing in offshore havens that are flush with cash, where the banks are safe and sound…
- A back-door way to qualify for an EU passport—which lets you live, work and invest in 28 countries including France, Italy, and Spain… and much, much more…
On the roster as well is Nick Hodges from NCH Tax and Wealth Advisors, whose specialty niche tax and financial planning practice works with Americans who hold an international perspective. For over 20 years, he has helped his clients handle their tax and financial affairs Stateside and abroad, mitigating taxes and maximizing opportunity.
I Feel Younger, Freer
Ready to retire but saddled with debt and recovering from a hip replacement, Jan H. felt overwhelmed. Was retirement really going to be this bleak? She couldn’t do it. So she left the stress behind…
"I’m thrilled. I feel more alive, younger, freer, like I´m growing and learning. Every day is an adventure. Over and over again people of all descriptions are friendly, helpful, intelligent, funny. And I’m losing weight without effort. In the U.S., I walked around the block or at the beach for exercise IF I could discipline myself to do it. Here I do it to go somewhere or to get something. It is more real and satisfying."
Plus, she says, she pays for her rent, utilities, TV and internet, and food—on well less than $1,000 a month!
An extensive traveler, he understands what American expats need as they manage their tax and financial worlds across multiple continents and this June, he’ll make sure you understand, too.
(We don’t want to neglect our Canadian readers, mind you. So we’ve arranged for you to hear from Doug Hendler of Blaney McMurtry LLP, as well. He’ll talk about tax considerations for Canadians when you’re living and acquiring real estate overseas. No sense paying more than you have to, and he’ll set out for you the guidelines you need to understand to make sure you take full advantage of savings available to you.)
Because, as I said earlier, this program is really about internationalizing many aspects of your life—not just where you live or spend time—we’ve also invited experts to talk with you about how you can diversify your portfolio across currencies, for instance, without ever venturing into real estate.
You’ll hear from Aaron Stevenson of EverBank, who will be on hand to discuss the global "toolkit" you have available to you right there at home. The U.S. dollar may be the world’s reserve currency right now… but critical signs are indicating that it may not be for long. Find out what you can do to hedge in your own portfolio and ensure that no matter what happens, you’re protected.
Discover Ways to Fund Your Life Overseas
One of the stumbling blocks our readers always mention when they talk about why they haven’t yet moved overseas is "money." After all, no matter how good the values you find overseas are, you can’t live anywhere for free.
And so in June, we’ll focus on several ways to fund your life abroad, most importantly ways you can harness the skills and abilities you already have and put them on the global marketplace so you can be earning extra income even before you go abroad. We’ll have Winton Churchill, founder of Barefoot Consultants, on hand to show you how it’s done. His advice and opinions are frequently cited in publications like The Wall Street Journal and Entrepreneur Magazine and you may recognize his name from International Living as well.
You may not think you have a "portable" skill, but don’t be so sure. At the Ultimate Event, Winton will show you how you can tap into the 30-70% of opportunity most folks leave on the table.
This Event Is Like "Jet Fuel" for Your Overseas Dream
That's just a small sampling of the experts you'll meet and hear from at this Ultimate Event. This program is unlike anything else we do in the sheer size of it alone. With more than 100 speakers and experts invited, there's no better forum on Earth for you to get your questions answered and help you identify the opportunities that make the most sense for you.
In addition to the location-specific presentations, we'll cover lots of other live-overseas how-to's as well, like…
…shipping your belongings… insurance, banking and utilities… rental management of your overseas property… starting your own business abroad…
…staying in touch—communications… finding work… common pitfalls and how to handle them… and much, much more.
Fundamentally, this event is about connections. Because we don't just help you identify the places overseas today that are the best match for your interests, likes, and needs… we also hand you the connections you need to get there, on the ground, fast.
As one pleased past attendee put it:
"There wasn’t a single unproductive moment; your speakers—each expert in his/her field—were engaging, informative, and, even more important, available throughout the conference for individual interaction.
"In short, it far exceeded my expectations. I arrived with considerable confusion regarding both a sound international financial strategy and an effective method for selecting overseas property. After private meetings (freely given) with several of your presenters, I now have a practical working plan that will be implemented immediately I return home.
"After absorbing the material presented, one thing became undeniably clear: inaction is NOT an option. Thank you for a job well done." —Jean-Claude Koven
Optional Add-on Tours
Discover a cosmopolitan city where you can afford a stunning waterfront home and California lifestyle, without the California price tag…
Why not take a spin through Puerto Vallarta while you’re there for this event? It has long been a jet-set haven, the spot where Richard Burton and Elizabeth Taylor fell in love filming “Night of the Iguana.” And it still retains an air of sophistication.
Here the majestic Sierra Madre Mountains sweep down to the Bay of Banderas. It’s a warm and sunny spot with tropical beaches, fresh ocean breezes, and temperatures that average 73-83F all year. There are three big hospitals. And a lively expat population, which makes it easy to settle. And you could buy a condo in the old town’s Romantic Zone from as little as $110,000. (You won’t get brand new but it will have ocean views, and you’re only a short walk to the beach, dining and shopping.)
When you register for the Ultimate Event, you’ll get information about optional add-on tours. Look for it as you may want to fly in a few days early or extend your trip by a few days on the back side to give yourself ample time to explore.
These tours aren't run by IL—instead, our local specialists have agreed to take small groups on fun, revealing, excursions. But space is very limited. We’ll share all the details when you register. Make sure you reserve your place early, however,as these always fill up!
It would take you months—really, years—to track down and meet with all the people you can connect with in three-and-a-half days in Puerto Vallarta this summer.
This Ultimate Event is like jet fuel for your overseas plans. In June, we can propel you from where you are now to where you want to be, fast… efficiently, and with ease…
It all starts, in fact, before you get there. When you put your name on the attendee list, the first thing we'll do is send you a special report called Your 2014 Overseas Strategy: The Planet's Best-Value Places to Live and Invest.
It's not available to anybody else. We created it for event attendees, only. It's meant to help you "get your ducks in a row" before you come… to help you make sure you get the most out of your experience on the ground.
In Your 2014 Overseas Strategy: The Planet's Best-Value Places to Live and Invest, we'll show you where you can…
…invest now and potentially watch that investment appreciate in value as you enjoy it at the same time…
…live well on your Social Security income alone… and trade up to a better life overseas…
…find market anomalies that are creating short windows of opportunity… a chance for you to beat the crowd and get in at great value, so you can watch your investment grow… and more…
Like our previous Ultimate Events, this will be a fast-paced whirlwind of information.
But don't worry, we've made the event easy to follow… so you can get the most out of it, regardless of your specific interests.
In the mornings, we'll have general sessions. These cover all the important information you need to know. And in the afternoons, we're holding in-depth workshops so you can focus on topics that interest you most.

We Couldn’t Live on the Beach Like this in California
"Living in California, we were spoiled by the warm climate and beautiful beaches,” says Patricia F. “Retirement would—or should—have given us time to enjoy all that more fully. And yet we had no realistic chance of retiring anywhere near a beach in California."
So they looked beyond our borders to find a beachfront retreat that provides them, as Patricia puts it, an “abundance of health, tranquility, adventure, and beauty”—for about one-fifth of what they spent day-to-day in the States.
"We live in a nice high rise condo overlooking the ocean. We enjoy a very comfortable lifestyle—even more luxurious than we had in California. Including everything except rent ($500 a month), we are currently spending about $1,500 a month."
Over the past 33 years, we've helped hundreds of thousands of people escape to a better, more affordable life abroad… to find a place that's right for them. Over that time, we've gathered volumes of information, services, and resources.
In June, we'll give you exactly what you need to make your decision as enjoyable and easy as possible.

Stress Down, Satisfaction Up
"We can now have a lifestyle like Florida in the 1940’s, but at a price we can afford. Our stress level is down and our satisfaction with life is definitely up… Living next to the water is something we always wanted to do but could never afford before now."
—Chuck and Jamie B.
